Teachers do make a difference-let's "Award" them

Battle Ground School District wants teachers who make a difference

The public and district employees are invited to nominate district teachers or other personnel who have made a substantial difference in the lives of students or in the lives of others.  All district employees are eligible to be nominated for the annual “Teachers Make a difference” Awards.

What makes a good teacher?

The best teachers are the ones who teach to the whole child. Their vision of education is not limited to the tangibles of academic achievement but encompasses daily doses of compassion, flexibility, communication, humor, imagination, and the willingness to be open minded. Most importantly, a good teacher is someone who uses both his head and her heart in equal measure throughout the school day. Compassion is in understanding that a student may be frustrated, angry or just unable to focus on the academics at hand.

What is so special about the Olympics?

The Olympian Games, which are starting today in Vancouver, Canada, are a Pan-Hellenic festival that began in ancient Greece. The original Olympic games consisted of athletics and contests of choral, poetry and dance. Modern Olympic Games are a revival of these ancient competitions.

Competition is part of our nature and is encouraged by cultures around the globe.  So every four years, Olympic sports events are held in different cities all over the world as separate winter and summer athletic competitions.

Special Olympics– In 1968, a competitive void was filled to meet the needs of children with disabilities, when the Special Olympics were founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver through the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation. The Special Olympics movement has grown ever since.

Art’s Commission given the green light

Laural Whitehurst, who is leading the effort to form an Arts Commission in Clark County, and former State Representative Val Ogden, together with the Clark County Commissioners, agreed to paint a brighter future for art in Clark County.

A non-profit foundation, Arts of Clark County, was proposed to the commissioners, to raise money for the envisioned plan. “All three Commissioners were in agreement to go forth with creating it,” Whitehurst is reported to have said.
